you would be better off with either straight 316L stainless or with a nickel plated stainless. nickel has been used by several commercial retailers for their electrodes due to the catalyst action for the electrolosis

I've had a cell I made from 316 tubes since February. I recently changed the water and mix and there is no rust or corrosion on the pipes. The bolt which makes the positive connection on the outer tube is nickel plated and had a flaky brown gunk covering it which just washed off and I've used it again.

The mix is a tablespoon of caustic soda in 1.5 litres of water. The cell is as good as the day it was made.

catfish..ive had a couple spots of brown gunk as well on my nickle plated anode...wat ya reckon that stuff is?Mine as well just washed off but seems like that could be a problem on a anode to get that stuff on it.My anode needs to have a good ampunt of magnostriction propertties...is there another metal besides nickle better for the anode with high magnostriction properties?I have a 304 piece of s.s. i could try but its magnostriction properties arent that high.Ahhh they do make magnetic s.s. as well...hmm guess i could try that for an anode and use the nickle plated soft steel electrode for the cathode still as it doesnt seem ro get the brown gunk on it.Thanks......

the only better catalyst for electrolysis is platinum, but cost would be a killer to get electrodes plated in that. besides i have heard bad things when it comes to hydrogen and oxygen being close together with that catalyst. i just can't say personally what happens. anyone know of a good "source" of Pt to check on this? something like a coin or something?

yeah platnium combines the gasses...i have some old alluminum i can try.Maybe in a weak KOH solution it wont get eat up too fast....i'l try an anode use'n it and see how it goes...if that doesnt work i'll just use a magnetic piece of s.s. and go from there i guess.......I think wat im need ing to do is get away with out plating my anode...use'n a solid piece of metal.Just came to mind that even do'n that for a test may help in a raney nickle catlyst layer on th ecathode ...maybe??....just as well its all fun anyhow.
