anybody here used an arc welding generator to make hydrogen?

I tried.
We made a carl cella replication (although i think my electrode may not have been big enough) and hooked it up to a car battery,... nothing....
So we brought out our big arc welder ( Its a very large unit, I think it will do 220 amps? ) and hooked that up to it...... still nothing.
But that was just with water and no chemicals.

As most welders out there use AC to weld ... the electrodes would probably not recover fast enough.

You would need one the does DC welding. That is what I tried this past weekend. I dropped the voltage way down 36volts and turned it on. Worked like a charm. This would not be a prefered method though. To big and is not very efficient way of producing hydrogen.

would be interesting to have some hard data to back that up as it seems possible that a gallon of diesle could produce more energy in the form of hydroxy than it needs to make it with the use of boosting the diesle/generator as well.Maybe not tho...hope someone has tried that already....

Hmm, good point on the diesel. The one I have is electric.

Any good diesel engine returns around 20hp for an hour on four litres (1US Gal) of diesel. Hope this helps you work it out .

hi all i should probably read this thread first. see my just posted thread on cell testing. i think that a tig welder is so versitile that it can be used not for production but as a great piece of test equipnment to get the most production out of a cell. with all the ways the output can be varied with the built in capabilities uf the machine it seems a natural. with some modification you could produce the wave forms alaska posted. with the capability to vary the frequency( into the megahertz ) built into the machine it looks to be a great cell tester. any thoughts?? bobbyr
