Steve T, I have done research on hydroxy explosions, and I have concluded that a relatively large (3 gallon) explosion will not kill you. The reason you get a loud noise is because of the surface area. The balloon has a large area, so the noise gets transmitted quicker. There is relatively little explosive comared to say a blasting cap. the reaction is not brisant at all, meaning low detonation velocity. Therefore it has pushing power but no shattering power. There is also no gas evolution to hurt and create large overpressures. For example ANFO detonates into N2, H20 and C02. Hydroxy turns into steam.
Furthermore, I put 2 gallons of hydroxy next to a bush and it did not move anything. The leaves just rattled, but from 50 feet it was loud. If you contain it though, then the shrapnel can kill. I wouldnt want to be near COMPRESSED and Contained mixture, because there is a larger amount in a small area.
