De-Scaler Electrolyte

Postby stephano » Thu Jun 01, 2006 12:42 pm

8) I was experimenting with my test rig for gas reaction.
This being 2 pairs of SS Tweezers (not worried about the small size at this stage)

With these 2 'electrodes', spaced at 5MM and hooked upto my variable PSU.
29.7V DC (psu limit) and 410 mA, I get fairly good gas production using plain tap water.

I obviously wanted to increase gas output, after a bit of head scratching as to what to try as electrolyte? I remembered I had some De-Scaler, in the form of Sulphamic Acid (crystal form..looks like sugar)

I added a tiny pinch of this to my tap water into a 1 litre sodastream bottle and re-tested, this produced much more gas, volts still at 29.7V, amps slightly more, now at 660mA. (I did try a really heavy concentration initially (one teaspoon) this pulled 2.5A @19V was a bit nervous about this and scrapped that mix)

Obviously with proper electrodes of decent size etc this would be much higher. But the thing that I was suprised at, was the very small amount of added sulphamic acid, about 1/10th of a teaspoon worth.

I'm wondering if this electrolyte is a reasonable alternative to the usual sodium hydroxide? possible in low concentrations? this stuff is hellish conductive

When time permits, I'll scale this up to a normal size cell, for further testing, this time with PWM drive.

Thoughts and comments welcome.

Not trying to hijack your thread but this sounds close to an experiment I have been wanting to try. A super high voltage and super low ampreage cell. Before anyone says anything yes I have read the electrolysis basics. I am aware that electrolysis is a funtion of amperage only. However I am intreged at the conscept of this. I am looking at using a MSD 6AL ingniton box with a MSD Blaster coil output at 48,000 volts and 300ma that should do something any thoughts?

Yup Higher Volts

Postby stephano » Fri Jun 02, 2006 5:50 am

 Higher volts is what I was thinking too. I like the idea of low current. This may negate the need for series cell to divide the high currents used across the cells?

Higher volts is easy to do, with a step-up SMPSU, I also like the idea of very low levels of electrolyte, hopefully running cool.

I have a variac here, which goes form 0 Volts up to 270 VAC, rectifying this would give about 381 VDC. I hope I don't need quite this much?

I still going to initially try PWM, with inductors to modify the energy pulses to the Cell, aka Stanley & Daves cell.

I have a load of heavy duty ferrite and iron dust ring cores lurking in the workshop. Also an LCR bridge, so I can report the inductance values arrived at.

I assume you guys saw the photo I upped?

If this works? multiple cells could still be used, but this time in parallel.

Ooops forgot the pic of my test is elsewhere

Not sure if this link will work?

Interestingly I found when I tested Higher Voltage I created More Heat.
Now admittedly this was continous Voltage and not pulsed as I suspect you
are looking at. From a lot of the other experimenters , I suspect that you
still need the constant current as well as the Pulsed High Voltage to "Whack
Off " the bubbles.
