I reckon i could reproduce a simmilar looking example with the following goodies.

1 A non-reactive container
2 Sulphuric acid
3 Water
4 Insect screen (fine wire mesh of galvanised iron wire)
So, I fill the container with dilute sulphuric acid (say 1 part to 4 parts water). You then simply drop a small section of the insect screen and wait. The zinc coating on the wire (its galvanised, remember) will react with the acid to give me nice pure hydrogen gas and leave me with zinc sulphate.
Zn + H2SO4 ==> ZnSO4 + H2
Now, if i could then somehow extract the zinc back out of the zinc sulphate, i wonder what solution i would be left with.
