As well as the dangerous Chlorine , the salt also causes faster corrosion of the expensive plates. [ I believe ]
KOH is the most efficient electrolyte I have seen that is commonly available.
Great that its also not so Nasty as others to us humans.
You still should avoid contact and inhaling of course.

well also... just as when you split water with electricity; you will be spliting the salt(NaCl) as well. So what happens is the water is split and the salt is split. Chlorine will not combine or react with anything unlike the Sodium. The sodium will react with the water to form NaOH(look firmilliar?) and H2.

So basicly you will still be creating sodium hydroxide if you use salt.

For got to add this..

Chlorine will not combine or react with anything (unlike the Sodium), so the chlorine gas(I don't believe it disloves in water) will be released for the water solution.

actually chlorine i belive is a cataylst.....i'll look that link up and pass it to ya....it s over at hydroxy boost under catalyst.....someth'n to do with ozone er someth'n, will check .
