8 Plate series cell (Kumaran)

This forum is for discussing anything related to electrolysis and electrolyzer designs.

Pinhead, thank you for your creative idea on water leveling & anti slosh.

My tought on water leveling is more complex than yours but can prevent cell shorting.

Image

Once the water level reach the set threshold, the floater seals the filler hole. In practical, this design requires precision because of 3mm cell compartment size.

On anti slosh method, I was thinking of total seal the top of cell compartment but insert two long 1" x 3mm hollow tube far apart from each other. This could prevent the water from pouring out because of narrow & higher hole but will allow gas to flow through.

Bob, the plate is not really clean. There are some oil film, thumb prints, dirts, glue, etc on the plates. I have to use acetone to clean the plate surface then rinse with distrilled water (already did that). I won't soak the plate into acetone. For conditioning, I will use the same method as before.

I have assembled one cell compartment yesterday. So far no water leakage. 6 more to go. I going to post the pictures soon.

Kumaran

Pin Head: Great lateral thinking.
-looks hard to do but great idea. Kumaran will probably need to do
straight forward design first to see how it all works.
So he can compare to alterations.
- Probably my biggest concern is fitting Metallic disk next to stainless
plate that is separated by 3 mm and still not creating any " closer path"
that the ions prefer to jump over.
# rule No. 5 ....the space between any part of the cell plate must be
of uniform gap. If any part is closer , the current will prefer this easier path
and not form as much bubbles over the rest of the plate.....(arbitory selection of Rule
No.)
-
Kumaran:
Because you are starting with filthy plate, you will have to endure very long
and Often cleaning Conditioning process.
It will use up more chemical as the solution will dirty more.
I would definately run the cheaper NaOH first to use as cleaning
solution. You will need to rinse with distilled water very well between
changes in electrolyte.
-
You may also find that the rubber and the glue contribute to strange
deposits and scum...All very annoying . but such is problems with
the cheaper way of making cells.

My first cell. I post this picture to show the water level and plate condition after running for 72 hours using 7A@10VDC. Look closer at the picture. Top portion of the plate turn into black colour.

Three rubber strips cut to use for seal. Two for side and one for bottom of the plate.

Closer view of plate edge. This is my first end plate, so I stick rubber strips on both sides. The rest will have rubber strip on single side only.

Applying weight for better glue contact. The plate with new rubber strip glued and placed in between two plywood. Toolbox with tools inside placed on top of the plywood. Toolbox works great (heavy & handy) to apply weight on plate.
