Surface Area

Hey, new member here.

It is obvious now the best plates are the ones which offer the biggest surface area.

I would say the best would be perforated SS plates.
I'll leave to the mathematicians here the task of calculating which plate thickness, holes size and spacing would offer the most surface.

Also, is aluminum ok ?
From Alaskastar's post, I figured using two heatsinks as electrodes could work good.

I really doubt you would find SS heatsinks (daa), so I imagined this :

take a perf plate, with 2/16 holes, center 5/16.
put a 6/32 x 2in machine screw in each hole, with a 6-32 hex nut to fasten it. There you go ! you have a stainless steel heat sink !

We should try to come up with a standard, most efficient design for everything, so people don't have to experiment again and again..

WATER TENSION AND BUBBLES STUCK IN THE FENCE ALL PERF WILL DO IS CAUSE BUBBLES TO HANG UP THERE FORE SHIELDING THE MESH FROM WATER AND THERE FORE SLOWING THE REACTION.
i am going to applyt a wettinr agent to see if bubbles will roll off faster if not i will incorperate a mechanical wiper,.

clovisc, I think if you look at most of the projects, you will see things like properly and equally spaced plates, etc.

I don't know how you are planning to use heatsinks, but you may not be fully utilizing your surface area. I am continuously learning the basics on electrolyzers, but I am working on a cylinder design.

From most posts that I have seen, flat 304ss or 316ss seems to work the best after it has been properly rough sanded to create tiny sharp edges, like brushed stainless steel.

You may want to check the reaction of aluminum with the electrolyte you will be using.

Hi Clovisc,
For surface area stainless screen works well for me, and I have found that I can use less electrolite. Wal-mart has sink screens that are cheap and very easy to use. You can use anything pointed with a taper to make a mounting hole, or other ways it can also be mounted. It's a fast way to get something started without a lot of complications. Get some stainless allthread, nuts, washers, bolts- 5/16 and 1/4" dia.
