I have had in my first cells lots of the brown scum. As I was explaining in my earlier post it all comes down to the prep. No one want's to take the time to find out why? When most just want to put the plates in and create hydroxy.
They suffer tear downs, and will have to resand the plates again. Just more work.. IF the just look at the logic. What is that brown scum and what causes it? Iron.. Iron.. Iron.. Iron.. So How do we get rid of it?

In lay terms, the passivation process removes "free iron" contamination left behind on the surface of the stainless steel from machining and fabricating. These contaminants are potential corrosion sites that result in premature corrosion and ultimately result in deterioration of the component if not removed. In addition, the passivation process facilitates the formation of a thin, transparent film that protects the stainless steel from selective oxidation (corrosion). So what is passivation? Is it cleaning? Is it a protective coating? It is a combination of both.
The three major variables that must be considered and controlled for the passivation process selection are time, temperature and concentration. Typical immersion times are between 20 min and two hours. Typical bath temperatures range between room temperature and 160F.

I would greatly appreciate ANY help you are willing to give! I am getting so frustrated with it and trying to figure out why I'm still getting this scum and "dirty" water. If you think that it is possibly an issue with the quality of the chemicals that I bought I would be willing to try the chems you have if you think it will clean it up.
I am not scared of the truth, so please fire away! If I have it setup wrong then I'd at least like to know what I'm doing wrong and correct it. I apologize if I made it seem as if I were upset or irritated with you, all of that is directed to the cell and it's lack of expected performance.

mos68x, from looking at your set-up in your projects page, I noticed that you introduce the charger"s clamps into the electrolyte. this is introducing iron,and copper into your electrolysis. Once this is introduced , the water has been contaminated. Also the large copper wire that is inside the cell will cause the dreaded brown scum to appear. Remember, as a rule of thumb, nothing should be inside the cell except stainless steel, and plastics.
I was partial to the parallel cell myself for a long time. I built my first series cell it was a fully flooded design,and it outperformed the best parallel cell, I had built 2 to 1. Also with a series cell ,you will be able to increase the KOH. This alone will help to clean up the brown scum......My two cents
