I'm just starting out but after reading many postings this is what I have determined.
Copper and Aluminim (sp) are bad. Copper corrodes to quick and dirties up the water. Some have said they have gotten sick using aluminim as it also corrodes easily. If you must go cheap you can use galvanized but it will leak Fe into the water after the zinc is removed.
For long term Stainless Steel is the best. Do try to find cheap versions of SS if you must go cheap. I expermented with scrap metal and finally gave up as it was more of a hassel to scrouge around for the right parts than to just buy them. Water easily dirtied and I was unable to experment further because I was always dealing with the water. Also because SS is a blend of metals, some are conjecturing it is some of the transistional metals in the blend that could act as a catalyst in the formation of H2 and O2. Jury is still out on that.
304 SS is much cheaper than 314 and will do nicely for a budget. Skimp on the container or anything else, but the metal is the one thing to do right.
