Since 'plating' also occurs in the lead-acid battery, and is partially responsible for the appearance of 'dendrites' on the plates which then become points of low resistance to current flow and will continue to grow unless treated.

Some of the additives made for lead-acid batteries to prevent or minimize sulfation are the oganic sulfonic acids which enhance the solubility of lead sulfate into the electrolyte.

The lead ions which are dissolved in the electrolyte make the plating of lead onto the plates possible during charge, in one direction, and during discharge in the other direction. The plating action is very slow and in very small quantities and does contribute to the reclamation of lead sulfate that might otherwise be lost as debris that settles to the bottoms of the cells.

To prevent the growth of dendrites it is necessary to 'burp' the battery cyclically at the rate of once each 30 seconds or so during charging. This is accomplished by momentarily removing the charging current and 'short circuiting' the battery terminals electronically by circuitry built into the charger. These 'burping' chargers may be home-made.

Best possible treatment regimen: Desulfator connected to the battery while trickle charging with a 'burping' circuit. While trickle charging the 'burp' rate may be slowed to once each several minutes.

For a very good 'primer' on lead-acid batteries and their rejuvenation go

Fix your 13 year old car battery which you have been using as a doorstop for the last three years with 'Scamm's additive.'

Three gallons in each cell of your car battery will:-

Make the plates as hard as diamonds. :D

Automatically makes little shelves (millions of them) neatly arranged on each side of the separator which have micro-hoists which lift the sulphate crystals on board and very tiny (Chinese?) workmen who have acid-proof coats and aqualung hit them with hammers.

Only $14,998.90 for a quart.

What I'm looking for is something which prevents the lead sulphate from ever going hard. I don't know what that might be at the moment.

Starting batteries with their porous plates are difficult candidates for rejuvenating if they are sulphated. The sulphation gets into the pores, expands, and then causes 'shedding.' Prevention seems the only cure really, unless the battery is somewhat oversized for the vehicle it is used in.

The sturdier plates (solid) of traction batteries are more responsive, And I have noticed this too. ie - my little 24 V electric scooters use batteries that just keep going, and have done for a couple of years, and those two 12 V deep cycle batteries, as well as the pair in a repaired electric bicycle were both brought back from the dead with no electrolyte and had been sitting around in this condition for years. Basically I added some distilled water and pulsed carefully watching and adjusting the power so they didn't get too warm or gassed too much.

I also have far more success with so-called 'marine' batteries, and larger-type truck batteries. I gather this is due to the plates being more solid than the SLI batts used in cars.

* But I'm all ears. :D
