Keep learning. Try all the circuits that catch your curiosity. This learning will only help you in the long run.

When you get around to building the PWM, you will be better equipped to figure out what is going on, as well as having known what went into the design.

Maybe you will be able to help other whom are learning and be able to put it in simple terms for other folks here as well.

Either way, you will only benefit from it, and maybe have fun while you are at it.

'Thumbs Up'

You'll get there in due time. For the time being enjoy where the journey is taking you!

Every little bit you learn along the way will really help when you get back to the 555 and the pwm you want to make.

I think you've already discovered - electronics devices and makin' stuff can be very addictive! At least it tends to be a fairly inexpensive one.

The list of links which will come up is very extensive so choose 100 for the number or results.

Then cycle through the list and click on the links which look interesting. Be prepared to spend a long time looking at web pages - there's some truly fascinating info about the 555 timer in those pages!

Please correct my assumptions, I'm struggling with this silly IC...

pin 3 goes out to whatever I want the on/off pulse to hit(an led/transistor/mosfet/etc.)

pins 2 & 6 are connected together with a capacitor(C) going to ground and R2

R2 connects the pin 2,6,C to pin 7

R1 connects pin 7 to pins 4,8,+V

So does this diagram work?
Image

and why are pins 8,4,7 seemingly connected?
and why are pins 7,6,2 seemingly connected?

how does pin 4 force pin 3 low if pulled to ground? and even though pin 5 isn't used here...how can it be used to adjust threshold trigger voltage, when pin 6 is the threshold pin?
