Has the full list of all 1093 of Edison's Patents, including the 147 relating to batteries. There are several on electrodes there that make good reading. Also has patents listed for related processes such as making metalic flakes, sheets, foils, etc.

Is there anything you've read in the literature that suggests Edison's
materials would offgas more than other dissimilar metals? Why did he
work so hard and long on that battery if there was an offgassing problem?
I only say this because I hate making false starts on premises I might
have questioned first.

For that matter I seem to remember Chris & Bob Boyce, also read it
elsewhere, say that it only takes 1.25V to dissocciate water into H2 & O
using SS electrodes. By choosing dissimilar metals and charging against
their natural potential, doesn't that just add to the voltage we need to
apply? (More power consumption.) Over-charging to make hydrogen just
seems counter-intuitive to me. As for increasing surface area to make
more gas, couldn't we just use SS chips/lathe turnings, or SS wool? Of
course anything less than pure distilled water with the KOH will make a
goopy and impossible to clean mess.

From what I've been reading in Edisons Patents on his batteries.... the Electrodes he used were QUITE UNIQUE, he made his own Nickel Oxide and Iron Oxide(which had some mercury in it, haven't found the whole process yet found MANY patents to go through).
His Oxides were in Powder form. I haven't read up on the Iron electrode yet but for the Nickel Electrode he took thin sheet metal, nickel plated and Perfed it then rolled it into tubes and packed it with the Nickel Oxide.
The Electrolite was basically KOH ... BUT he had other stuff with it haven't gotten to that patent yet either but it was referenced to have Lithium in it.

Another interesting side note.... When he prepared the Batteries for shipping he put a REVERSE CHARGE into it to Draw ALL of the chemicals back into the plates before the electrolite was drained out otherwise the Iron plate would Oxidize from contact with the AIR because of the Mercury in it !

Hopefully for our purpose solid plates or colloidial will work with just diluted KOH.

I found 4 of the smaller Miner Lamp batteries to Disect and experiment with. I will fill you in when I get them and see first hand what is in them :D

Where you said the ideal was to overdrive the recharging by .3V,
is that per cell? If so, a person would need to compute the
number of cells based upon the energy difference between
materials, and then add the (number of cells X .3) to get the
ideal over-voltage. Since car systems run off 12V, the overcharging
voltage would need to be something above that, which would require
making alterations to the alternator somehow. (Of course that's
assuming you want just one battery to do everything.)

I was thinking maybe easier to charge all cells in parallel thru
diode arrays. The correct number of diodes would create voltage
dividers (with the correct approx. overvoltage), taps between the
diodes feeding all cells. Meanwhile the full battery voltage could be
used to power the ignition, lights, accessories, etc. through a stock
voltage regulator. What do you think?

P.S. If using KOH, wouldn't you want the sulfer-free nickel? I've seen
KOH liquid at the larger building & hardware depots.
