electrode material

Postby BOBBY R » Sat Aug 26, 2006 12:36 pm

hi all i am currently in contact with a manafacturer of a new class of materials.. conductive plastics. he is sending me info on carbon & ss plastic matrixes to use as electrodes. he is also knowledigible on electrolisis cells among many other uses. i am awaiting a reply about a sample piece & price for use in my own unit( not yet constructed). a completely plastic cell would be very easy to assemble with non conductive, non reactive adhesives. there are many on the market. pvc washers do the spacing while the adhesive sets up. any thoughts?? bobbyr

electrode material

Postby BOBBY R » Wed Aug 30, 2006 11:04 am

hi all got a reply yesterday. the material is manafactured in pellet form. i would have to have a full on extruder to make the plates. i dont have the time or desire to cobble together a way to make the plates. the price quote was minimum 40 lbs at 20.00$ per pound. if anyone is interested let me know. if so i,ll see if we can get a small amount for testing. does anyone in this forum have access to an extruder 8) ??? was on the night shift this week so i,m hitting the sack. have a good day all. bobbyr

Conductive plastics are used in some flexable heaters. There are a few manufacturers of the heaters and you might be able to buy the heaters and make electrode plates out of them. The carbon content determines the watt density. The little that I know makes me think they would react like carbon rods or carbon plates with some of the carbon turning into CO or CO2. This could be totally wrong since I don't know what is being used to create the conductivity in the plastics you have found.
When the price of gasoline went over $2.00 per gallon I started looking at alternatives again.

I think those pellets come in nickle coated graphite.

electrode material

Postby BOBBY R » Sun Sep 03, 2006 11:28 am

HI ALL the web address is WWW.PREMIX.FI for the material manafacturer. the material can be made in carbon or stainless variations. this is for true power conduction not surface conduction or membranes etc. it is also available in various different plastic formulations. from what i have discussed with them they can formulate an electrode material with many different properties. they manafacture to your requirements. if anyone is interested take a look. i am not a plastics engineer but they were very helpful with the laymens terms i specified. the only requirement is good old cash :lol:i think this is something for the near future or for a member who wants to try out new materials. if anyone is seriously interested please post it. if so i,ll continue to check it out. i personally would enjoy trying out this material when i get to the electrolizer building stage. right now my limited time & energy are being focused on the power producing project. to build the heat exchanger system is complicated & time comsuming. . i,ll sign off for now. i,m going out to the garage to continue building the prototype headers. have a good holiday all. bobby r

HI GUYS this was the email last sent to me from the material manafacturer bobby r

I have attached pricing on our PRE-ELEC 5-999X56155-B material. The 24-999X is very similar in formulation but uses a base resin that is 7 times higher in price. so the cost of material is about $3-4/lb higher.

These materials are designed for electrodes and have surface resistivities that are closer to theoretical values (volume resistivity divided by the thickness of the test sample).

Best regards,
Steven Kidd

BobbyR:

Why do you want to use conductive plastics? Is cost the issue?
I've seen graphite paint (highly conductive) at fleet-farm stores.
Not sure how well this stuff holds up, but several coats over
sheet metal might suffice.

hi thrival to answer i love material science. its the evolutionary aspect of new materials. not cost. if a new plastic can get the job done, with far less weight & far easier to assemble i,m all for it. gluing plastic is far easier than welding stainless. as long as the new materials perform ok & dont react adversly in an electrolizer why not? from what i understand right now they are engineered to perform as conductive electrodes. price per square in of electrode area is a question. only way to find out is buy the material & make some electrode plates. please dont think i,m trying to push any changes on the members. i myself have$ 1000.00 worth of 316 cut & sitting in my shop ready to go. i would not like to waste it. however it would not be the first time i have changed things around in the middle of some project or another to check out something different. it,s the way i personally gain valuable experience. if anyone wants to share the cost of some material i,de be happy to work with them. if not thats ok too. i,de be willing to bet most of the other members & myself, can get our projects finishet with the materials we already have & understand. i just love learning.have a great day bobbyr
