If I'm not mistaken, a MOT only reaches 2kV give or take, and that
from 120V mains, altho the magnetron heater coil is only about 3V.
The output is then clamped to 4kV. If you crunch the numbers that's
about a 1:16 turns ratio. If you converted 12V DC to AC, using a
symetrical wave oscillator/multivibrator, (12V+ & 12V- peaks) the
best output is about 200V, or clamped, double that, which isn't really
HV, but enough to kill you. You could drive your MOT with an
inverter, using the clamper circuit, and reach the transformer's rated
4kV, but the efficiencies aren't good, you'll use lots of battery power
and probably overheat your inverter.

May I suggest an ignition coil? ...or possibly a flyback coil from a TV
or computer monitor, altho the ignition coil would be my first choice.

Sam Barros' www.powerlabs.org is a good site for HV ideas. You
might want to read his warnings about MOTS.

I tried charging a Joe Cell with 60Hz main voltage driving an ignition coil
using a circuit from Snock's HV page, and got zero bubbles. You might
get better results at other frequencies, or combinations.

All I can say is an ignition coil didn't reveal any visible clues
when charging a counter-top Joe Cell (no bubbles.) My cell is
made of tool wrap (very thin .003 SS, not 1mm tubes.) My arcs
were about 2mm. I didn't want to blow my voltmeter by trying
to measure it.
