Anyone making baloons for New Years?

Postby rsgpitt » Sat Dec 31, 2005 4:33 pm

Is anyone going to make some hydrogen baloons to light off on New Years Eve? I know I am going to make a bunch of the twisty baloons that clowns use to make shapes. I found them to be louder than the spherical baloons. Happy New Year.

How did the balloon making go? Still have all of your fingers?

I know you are far "braver" (that could be interperated differently) then I if you're making balloons and handling them with your bare hands. When I approach anything around the volume of a tennis ball in my explosion tests, it gives an explosion that I would not want to be anywhere near.

The concussion alone is enough to keep me back 8 or so feet when I press the button.

We're covered in rogue "static electricity" often enough to become a trigger ourselves. Handling balloons filled with hydroxy is, in my opinion, something that should never be done if one wishes to keep their eyes, ears & fingers.

Wow my stuff must not be pure browns gas. The baloons went fine, but i have had full 20 oz bottles explode on me with only a torch tip and a little water in the bottom of the bottle, and the only thing that happenned was that i got a leak in the bottom. I light a paper towel fuse right near it and one time i had one explode next to me, and my ears rang for 30 minutes but thats the worst. The baloons are bigger than tennis balls, my electrolyzer is estimated at 2.5/20 lpm, and the baloons are 15 minutes to blow up. I got much applause for the show. Made 5 baloons. They did lose quite a bit of gas in the 2 hours of sitting around though. The ones that i tested right off of the machine are much louder.

Heh, funny story about that.

For New Years I took two glass test tubes of pure hydrogen and threw them off a 4-story apartment building.

Quite an interesting night...
