It was a 6 VOLT battery that being overcharged with 14.5 VOLTS, and about 350 AMPS. I at that time used the "Jumper Cable" method, and used a Clamp-on type amp meter.
so the hydrogen production was through the roof. try using a 3 volt cell and hitting it with 12 volts. imagine the possibilities.
the 6 volt battery was NEW, and had a full charge. The 12 volt source was a Ford Truck, and was running at 2K RPM's to keep the amperage up. the 6 volt cell produced so much hydrogen that in just a few minutes (less than 5) it was almost completely dry from the boiling action/ electrolysis.
much was learned from that poor old battery.
too bad the place I bought it from went out of business 10 years ago.
