Updates

Postby kumaran » Tue Nov 07, 2006 11:39 pm

Hi,

The cells sealing dried nicely. No leakage. The bigger cell doesn't look rugged as 6" x 6" cell. I proceed with cleaning process with 6" x 6" cell. I didn't fix the cell into container at this moment.

I'm using power supply with adjustable voltage range between 9.5VDC to 13.54VDC and can handle upto 40A. Placed the cell in open area and pour in old electrolyte (NaOH solutions) till top. Suck out some electrolyte using syringe from each cell compartment. Apply lowest voltage first. When water rises to top then suck with syringe again. Increase voltage by stages and repeat excess electrolyte removing process until the meter reads max voltage 13.54VDC and 2A.

I wanted to get around 5A with 13.54VDC. Pour in electrolyte from the cell into glass container and add more NaOH pallets. Refill back the electrolyte into cell. Did the same process to maintain water from overflow. I got 5A with 13.54VDC.

Wanted to check how much water level needed to avoid overflow at 5A. Power off. Water level was 10mm below the top. I tried to reverse polarity to clean the other side of plates. I saw meter reading rose to 6.5A and electrolyte overflows. Why? :?:

The water reduces faster than expected because of vaporisation. Touched the end plates, slightly warm. Replaced water losses with distrilled water. When the bubble foam reaches top and start flowing to other cell, meter readings goes higher (shorting) and comes back to initial value if the foam stays within its cell compartment.

Power off and let the electrolyte in the cell overnight. I dare not leave the cell powered overnight. Today morning, I notice the water level at end plates reduced much lower compared to middle cells. I refill back with distrilled water.

Today, I will fix the cell inside container and refill with new electrolyte for conditioning. I will set around 1-2A and power the cell for maybe 24hours. Also I will measure gas production after the cleaning process.

Forgot something.

During electrolysis, I blow air onto foam. The foam bubbles gets bigger and rises higher. Why? :?:

Gas measurement

Postby kumaran » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:45 pm

Glass sealant that I was using for cell gave problem again. I notice after a while electrolyte leaks out. Not straight away. Rinse the cell with distril water and wipe dry. I apply additional glass sealant at bottom of the cell and let it dry for about 2 hours.

Then fix the cell inside container. Refill with new electrolyte (NaOH). Connect to power supply and meter reads 4A at 13.54VDC. It takes 2 minutes to get 500mL of gas. That is 0.25LPM. I guess its not very efficient at this moment because since the cell didn't go through proper conditioning yet. How is the efficiency? Can somebody provide me formula to calculate cell efficientcy?

I just key in the data into ElectrolysisEfficiency xls file. It shows 219.64. Previous best reading using cylinderical cell I got 370.07. I know the lower the number are better efficient. Bob Boyce 8 plate cell produce 92.0 efficiency.

I didn't connect power supply overnight to the cell. Today morning, I saw electrolyte drained again and trapped inside container. Can't use for another testing since the sealant can't cope with NaOH.

Will move on to bigger cell testing.

I am sorry to hear of your problems Kumaran.
The separated container cells will give less output. Only because there is
a cumulative field effect when all plates are working
closely together in the same direction.
-
I have had some set backs...............ummmm...I got a leak as well.
The new plastic I'm using did not glue well together with the glue I tried.
So am going back to good old PVC cement. This is a bit desperate.
If it leaks - I will need to re-build the whole box....Damm.
I got down to 2.9 Wh/L at 58 L/Hr... but this was with the leak.
Got this straight after changing to 27% fresh KOH/deminerilised water.
-must go and post in projects.Cheers.
