thanks for the replies. some very interesting ideas. while playing onthe net found this site IHSRESEARCH.COM. they are trying to bring to market a device using thermo transducers in the exhaust for elect gen. from their video & product description it has no backpressure. super good if it works.if anybody checks this out i think it might be one answer to the generating problem. thanks for listening to my ramblings. bobby r

no.. because your just running it off of the heat (that is normaly wasted) of the engine and other componets. you arent useing engine exaust or intake or anything like that...just heat.
But i dont know how nessasary this would be. I guess it all depends on the requirements of your electrolyser. I read on anouther post that you can modify the alternator to get better output or somthing like that. and i dont even know if that is nessecary, due to the extra output that already exists. I guess it all depends on how much you need.

On a very very small scale it does. not enough to matter, but slightly, possibly measurable.

The vacuum pressure is directly linked to two variables. Combustion energy, and the pressure difference between combusted gasses and gasses in the exhaust system.

That is, part of the combustion cycle in each piston is used to pull another piston down, sucking gas into the cylinder. Part of that cycle is used to push another cylinder up (evacuating the combusted gasses from the cylinder).

The less pressure in the exhaust system, the less energy it takes to push that piston up, the more energy is available for vacuum/drive.

If you remove a lot of heat from the exhaust system (via radiator setup), you reduce the pressure, improving overall engine efficiency by a small bit. It actually WILL increase vacuum pressure!

Again, i'm not sure it's enough to matter in the total scheme of things, but it's there nonetheless.

Hi all

Running an extra alternator powered off from the exhaust is a sound idea.
The heavy equipment I owned for many years all had turbo chargers that were powered by the exhaust.
A note about back pressure in the exhaust systems - sometimes back pressure is a 'requirement' for an ICE engine to run properly. For example, just recently a friend of mine purchased a yamaha motorcycle that so happened to have loud customized straight exhaust pipes with very little baffles inside them. He didn't much like the sound and the engine backfired often. Finally he replaced the pipes with an original stock system. The engine was much more quiet but the beautiful thing was that his engine ran much much better and was no longer backfiring. The mechanic explained to him that the custom exhaust hadn't provided the necessary back pressure that that particular model of engine required.
So, perhaps one could add an exhaust powered alternator/generator and remove or adjust some of the baffles in the muffler system and end up at very little or even no loss at all. Wouldn't that be nice? :)

exhaust

Postby mrgalleria » Mon Jan 09, 2006 4:04 am

As an aside, racers have a heat resistent wrap they put around headers, and exhaust to increase power. This seems to move the heat down the exhaust to the point where the wrap ends. For your suggested application, this would be a benefit (as where it is normally a disadvantage at the point where the wrap ends), you could just wrap the exhaust to the point where you want to install your heat obsorbing coil, thus freely grabbing a lot of heat.
