Silicon Dioxide as an electrolyte?

This forum is for discussing anything related to electrolysis and electrolyzer designs.

Bob, please elaborate.

I've only explained it the way I understand it, but i was wrong once before so it could happen again. :)

I can take a bit of criticism, as long as you can back it up with facts so that I learn from my mistakes.

Hi BigGeorge

Hi, BigGeorge, I'm new here, so I hope I'm not being rude by speaking up. I can certainly understand your being skeptical. But that being said, I encourage you to pursue your passions, and share anything that you learn. You sound like a handy guy.

You mentioned having a 150Kw generator as being useful. I may be retireing in a few years, and I'm contemplating moving to some rural property in order to be able to afford some land, and I also think it would be handy to have a large generator. There are sites that show how to take a large used electric motor and convert it to being a generator, at a significant cost savings.

Any small used car engine could run it, but whether it is a gasoline or a diesel engine, I really believe I can now replace half the fuel (hopefully more!) with Hydroxy gas produced by a second alternator and a series cell. For this I am very grateful to this website, and Chris, Bob, and AlaskaStar.

I also want to produce pure H2 and compress it into an old propane tank to use like natural gas for cooking. I think I'm going to try using a home-made windmill with a "disc brake" alternator.

You sound like you want somebody to "spell it out" for you and prove it works. I can't speak for anybody else, but here in the US if you want to brew home-made ethanol as an alternative fuel or a beverage, you need a federal license, which they WILL NOT give you. If you are caught making ethanol, you will be arrested and fined. Getting caught putting red "untaxed" diesel fuel in a road-registered vehicle will cost you thousands of dollars and put your name on a "watch list".

Getting in-between a politician and his tax money over here will eventually end up getting ugly. This is sad, because Benz, Ford, Edison, and many others started by experimenting in their garage. I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it seems any major innovations from global corporations are instantly patented, and are then "spoon-fed" to us just enough to keep everyone from rioting, and never enough to really make a difference. -Ron

Hi New Here,

I see what you are saying regarding the lack of freedom in the US. For a country who so openly declare that you have freedom, you guys certainly do it in the most difficult way possible.
Every day, your freedom is snatched from you, nibble by nibble. The powers that be have been gouging at your "freedom" more than ever in the past 6 years, under the premise of fighting "tear-rism" you are no longer free to do a lot of things you could take for granted in the 1990s.

I am fortunate that I live in Australia. Our stupid prime minister is trying to follow in Bush's footsteps, but our political systems are very different so we have not felt the effects in as much detail as you guys have.

As for having it "spelt out" for me.. Yes I would, but at the same time, I lack the finances to be able to pursue my ideas. I spend most of my time theorising and researching the topics of power generation, engines, electrolysis, and just about every topic that is covered on this site.
I have a lot of ideas of my own, and unfortunately, even just to prove myself wrong on one idea would cost several hundred dollars. Money I don't have.
As an example, The idea mentioned above regarding using high frequency AC power. I have hashed this idea out in my head. Water becomes easier to break apart when using 2.4ghz pulsed DC power, however you are still left with the fact that your electrodes will wear out if they are not rust proof. One will oxidise and one won't. So the next logical step to me is to switch the + and - over on the electrodes, so that the one that was rusting stops, and the one that wasn't rusting will start to rust.
To kill 2 birds with one stone, why not use AC power at 2.4ghz to do the pulsing and the switching simultaneously??

Well, to prove myself right or wrong would cost a fair whack of money to build a 2.4ghz AC power supply. If i'm wrong, i've just wasted a few hundred bucks on a crazy invention. I'd much rather put the idea out on this site, and let someone think it over or write back to me and say "I tried that and it didn't work, or it did work if I used purple water...."

As for car engines... In australia, we have a car made by Holden or GM called a commodore. They have been in production for 30 years with a new model every year. They have a 3.6 - 3.8 litre V6 engine and they make approximately 100,000 of these cars a year. Australia's most common car. The engines are available at wrecking yards for $200 thru to $600 for a current model engine. They are SO common and cheap, that it would be a crazy notion to experiment on anything else if you were going to build a stationery hydrogen / power plant for at home. These engines put out between 100 and 150kw easily, and take a lot of abuse before they will die. The figure of 150kw is at high RPM, so ideally you would take such an engine, run it at 1-2000 rpm and it would produce approx 20kw of electricity, but you could easily ramp it up to 30 or 40 if necessary.

I would dearly love to live on the land. Luckily it is cheap enough in Australia. However, you end up being VERY remote. There is no TV, Water, phones, electricity, internet, etc.... in some parts of the country. You are literally on your own out there. Most towns in outback Australia have only 1 building. This is the local pub / police station / post office / general store all rolled into one.

I was reading somewhere today about a motor from a Fisher and Paykel washing machine and using it as a generator. These are an incredibly efficient design, and getting hold of an old F&P washing machine is pretty easy. The motors do not die in them, the control panel is electronic (touchpad) and they usually die from a wet circuit board or a corroded chip, or corroded track on the board.
Using a fisher & paykel washing machine motor on a wind generator, or the V6 running on hydrogen..... Now that appeals to me. :D
