I have prepared new electrolyte solutions for isolated cells. Add in 0.5Kg of NaOH into distril water. The solutions not strong enough to show readings on analog ammeter for 7 isolated series cells. But can see little bubbles flowing from plates. No choice I have to add in another 0.5Kg of NaOH. Now the meter shows around 1.5A - 2A. At this stage each cell shows around 1.8V to 1.9V which is good. I need more electrolyte probably another 1Kg of NaOH to get 10A.
Then I connect only 6 cells in series. Current rose to 5.5A. More bubbles flowing out. At this stage each cell shows around 2.14V to 2.18V. Then move on to connect only 5 cell. Current rose to 10.5A and together with voltage for each cell. I didn't measure the voltage for each cell but total voltage was 12.10VDC.
With 5 cell in series, I measure gas output from one of the cell. It takes around 3.5 minute to fill up 500mL (best readings). Rough calculation for total 5 cell is 0.71LPM (2.82Wh/L). I should get at least 0.86LPM to equal Faradays efficiency.
I have completed construction of 8 plate series cell. Pour in electrolyte and leave it overnight. No leakage. I'm happy. I have to find big container to fit this setup in to measure gas production.
Thanks Bob & Rich. Yes, I have read your comments on my mistakes about using acetone to clean up the plates. Using acetone is not mistake. I just wanted to make sure the plates are free from dirts, oil, glue & etc before assemblying it. Just one to two drops of acetone onto cotton to rub clean 8 plates surface. So its very minimal amount of acetone and it dries fast. I have never attempt to soak the plates into acetone for days like Frank Roberts.
If acetone adds impurities to the plates then during cleaning process where the plates soaked into strong electrolyte and leave it for days, should remove all those impurities. This was my thinking when I use acetone even after Rich has mentioned not to use it. It doesn't fall under "action without knowledge is foolish". Just my thought that it should work. If it doesn't, I should bare the cost.
I'm creating new topic as "7 isolated series cell (Kumaran)" to report on the progress as this design is different with 8 plate series cells.
