High-temperature electrolysis of steam

Postby AntDavison » Tue Jul 25, 2006 7:39 am

see

http://www.hydrogen.energy.gov/pdfs/pro ... lachov.pdf

for the full 4 page document,

one paragraph ...

"High-temperature electrolysis of steam is known to be at least two times more energy-efficient for H2 generation than low-temperature electrolysis. An additional, at least five fold, decrease in electricity consumption can be achieved by reducing electrolyzer voltage using an anodic depolarizer. The cost of H2 generation will be further reduced if the high-temperature electrolyzer is deployed next to a source of waste heat and distributed power generation unit (solid-oxide fuel cell and/or solar). The proposed system’s modular design will allow scaling up and customization to meet a variety of site-specific requirements."

Physical Factors That Affect Gas in Water
-Water Temperature
-Cold water holds more gas in solution than warm
-Partial pressure of the gasses in the atmosphere
-The higher the pressure of these gasses in the atmosphere, the more gas is held in solution

might be a good idea to preheat the water with the exhaust manifold for better gas separation

waterbard:

Since electrolysis heats as well as splits the water and assuming the
heat isn't the most efficient use of power, sounds like heating the
water with a heat exchanger from exhaust gases or circulating
coolant isn't such a bad idea.

AlaskaStar told me running hydrogen in an ICE is just no good in
the arctic; the exhaust steam plugs the exhaust pipe. Apparently
hot water/steam freezes much faster than liquid.

Thrival,

You are correct. if you go to Chena Hot Spring... in the winter (like -50 F outside) the place is open for business, but you get to the door...freezing your arse off and it's LOCKED! then you pound on it a while and it opens and you see a person throw a bucketful of water at you, but it freezes into little droplets before it hits you. Can you say "KODAK MOMENT"??? so yes hot water freezes MUCH faster than cold water.

I crushed my finger so I can't type too much. I'm right handed. and the bone is thoroughly CRUSHED. so be patient please and spelling errors are to be had a plenty now.

You know the electrical resistance of a conductor increases with its temperature. The cold resistance of a 100 watt bulb (about 6 ohms) is less than a tenth of its hot working resistance. This means at the instance of turning on there will be a surge of electric current through the filament (remember the law that lower the resistance higher the current flow for the same applied voltage?). This instantly heats up the tungsten filament to white-hot, about 2500 degree Celsius, giving off light.

any other ways to heat up tungsten......?

Microwave-powered sulphur lamps also get very hot. The plasma created inside emits light...I wonder if a flow of water vapour on the bulb could be enough to break down the water molecules. But anyway, it would be hard to seperate both gases created. They would end up combining again into water, a bit like when a very high voltage is applied to water. the water explodes releasing hydrogen and oxygen but are quick to recombine.
