This forum is for discussing anything related to electrolysis and electrolyzer designs.

Would this Series Design work??

Postby clone477 » Mon Sep 11, 2006 12:56 am

I had an idea of building my first series design electrolizer(booster for 12volt application) using stainless buckets/dishes, stacked one on top of the other with some type of non conductive spacer seperating the dishes. Then just fill each bucket to the rim with distilled water. Reason I suggest this is because local to me there is a store that carries both smaller dish type stainless and larger bucket type stainless for around $3/piece. I assume it would be of lower quality stainless, but none the less stainless. Does this sound workable as a test cell. Thanks for any advice. FErn

I get the point about the stainless, and it is most like imported from china. But will the design function properly as a series cell??

Sorry for the newby question, Ive been apart of the forum, mostly just reading for a while now. I dont think you understand what I am trying to describe. Ive read many times that current bypassing cells is when ineffieciancys happen, what Im talking about in my design has the electrolyte completely separated by the electrodes. Thanks for taking the time to answer my original question though. I dont expect any further explaination. And I apoligize for being a pest. Fern

series cell

What you are describing I think is what is known as the series cell design. Take a look at Bob Boyce's cell designs.

The use of of buckets or dishes will work, in a submerged design. The spacing can be 1mm, or more determined by the thickness of spacers used. Spacers should be on the outside wall of the buckets. If you use 1mm around the side walls you will have about 3mm space at the bottom. You could go to my projects page for some ideas . I am also buying 1Qt. SS dish ,preparing for another project , there is about 70 sq. in. in one of these. Most of these SS dishes are made 18/8 or 302 SS. not as high a quality as 316 but you won't be soaking them in 100% muriatic , or sulfuric acid, So They Should work. Use your ideas and go for it!
