PVC is only a little incompatible with NaOH. The temperature and concentration used will greatly impact how long the two can work together. The PVC will get brittle and can crack easier, but will not usually just fail for no reason. This has been well known in the plumbing industry for a while. A side effect of using caustic chemical drain cleaners is this embrittlement, then the use of pipe snakes or clog busters can result in broken pipes with PVC. The main risk for booster builders using PVC is the lack of heat resistance, and with embrittlement the connection feedthrough points can crack and leak from the clamping pressure applied by those connections.
