Series vs Parallel

Postby Danberman » Tue Dec 26, 2006 7:21 pm

could someone please explain this to me. Everyone is saying that series is so much better then parallel because its much more effiecient. Well if you are shooting for a 1.something volts per cell, why would series be any better than just running a parallel at 1.something volts. With series machining inaccuracies such as the spacing between the plates would affect the voltage across each plate, so some mab be geting 2 volts and others <1. Why would this be any better than just running that magical perfect voltage across each cell? Is it simply a matter of obtaining that perfect voltage at a nesecery current? if so you can pretty easily pull 2 volts with plenty of current from a microwave transformer with a rewound secondary. Sorry if this is a dumb question but i just don't understand why every1 is advocating for series.

If you are ready to understand why, then I am sure one of us can go over it again. You could read past mail of this site to find out the reason.

So you don't understand this?

what we need is a" newbie look here post" a subject that explains the basics , the process, some pics showing the diff. between series versus parallel, what you can and cannot do about cell leakage, how to connect, some safty rules what to expect ,at least some basic learning tools to read . aperson does not know where certain post are may be those related post could be put in a group to go through. that might help to provide a source for those easy questions. a picture is worth many words.at least the newbie could ask some well informed questions then . that would keep chats on covered subjects to a minimum. anyone could then tell someone new where to learn the subject being discussed. newbie look here under "my projects and other peoples projects". not everyone has same skills what seems silly to you may be a big step for the uninformed beginner. simple questions can be a major irritation . of course some may just need to find another project to do .he he .this may already be set up and i need to be the one looking there . have a good day! :)

Yes, I understand all of what you are saying. The only thing that I didn't really realize was the magnetic fields working together to produce gas over Faraday. Without those magnetic fields "helping" the series cell, a parallel cell with the correct voltage would be as efficient as a series cell. The problem comes in, as you say, with the power/amperage control.

My post was basically pointing out that the electrical power would be the same, but I failed to point out the magnetics that Bob talked about.

In other words, if[/] you have a 2v supply you can run parallel and be a LOT more efficient than if you run any type of parallel cell on higher voltages.

When running higher voltage, series cell design is pretty much required.

The magnetics [i]still
help series cells more than any parallel cell, though.

Mr. Bob Boyce
May I please receive a copy of the schematics for the power controller board that you suggest for the series cell. I have one built that needs a little help . I would greatly appreciate your help in this area . Any sugestion will be appreciated . If this e-mail adress is acceptable, please send to jleppla@verizon.net Thank you for your time!
