Electrolysis to waste.

Ok. here I go again.

I remember some one says that adding Aluminum foil to Sodium hydroxide, aka caustic soda, or to that thing to clean ToiletBowl, may be Hydrocloric Acid, will generate great Gas output. (i don´t remember if water is needed)

Well, the Aluminium will desintegrate, as Stainless Steel will do in a wile for the electrolysis.

I think Aluminium is more abundant on natural state on earth and doesn´t requires all the process that SS needs to be produced, wich, at the end, will consume more power to achive Clean fuels.

What is the result reaction of those mixes?
may be the equation: Al + HCl = ALCL + H+
What it means: Aluminum + Hydrochloric acid = Aluminum Chloride + Hydrogen Gas as a by-product.

2AI + 2NaOH + 2H20 = 2NaAlO2 + 3H2 + HEAT

what can be done to 2NaAlO2 to make it usefull?

Did ALCL can be used to produce again HCL or something usefull?

The main question is what could happen if we apply electrolysis to those wastes to separate the elements as we do it on watr to disasociate H2 from O? I think it still more clean than use Oil as fuels

Just checking for re suable wastes, I saw thet the reaction ends fast and even adding more Aluminium to the liquid, it will not react because the saturation in it.

I know that Chlorine is extremly hazard to health, but, something good can be obtained by the reaction and separation of elements, don´t you think?

Any comments and corrections are so welcome.

Happy Holly Days
Juanito

P.S. I have no idea if it is cheap or easy to porduce those acids, but something good will come along.

Although this process does work, its a Good Waste of Aluminum and is Totally impractical.

The Cost to Recover the aluminum, FAR Exceed the Gain in a fuel.

And if everyone used this process to generate hydrogen for there vehicles, Aluminum would be in Greater Shortage than Gasoline is now.

This doesn't even take into account the Potential Hazzards of this process.

Thanks for the oppinion, but

Thanks for your kind oppinion, but I did not intended to set this thing on a vehicle.

Iam extremly curiuos about this kind of things and I intend to build an incinerator Just pick up on a local campaign aluminium foil (costco wastes tons from their food service) and do the experiment, but just Ideas.

I will keep researching.

Zn + 2HCl ====> H2 + ZnCl2

Hydrochloric Acid plus zinc in an aqueous solution(in water) reacts to form hydrogen... not sure about aluminum however.

The reaction of using Sodium Hydroxide and Aluminum is a bit complicated. Aluminum reacts with water to form AlO + H2. Now the NaOH reacts with the AlO to form some other compounds that I am unsure of. Might be Aluminum Hydroxide + Sodium Oxide but I don't know.

Sorry but you are wrong about aluminum being easy to create. It really isn't, hence the higer price then even steel. It takes massive amounts of electricity to split the aluminum oxide that is collected from the soil. Aluminum might be abundent but it isn't free.

The only idea that might work is to use all the wasted aluminum that isn't being recycled but instead being sent to the dump. Then it might be economical but it still won't get rid of our oil decendancy.

Perfect, still on learning process

Postby juanito » Sun Dec 24, 2006 10:39 pm

Wel I learn something new every time I ask.

May be I am confused on the Aluminium abundance, I remember that may be in the Moon is most aluminium, but is too far  hehe.

Thanks for your help.

according to this site it is oxygen that is the most abundant. However they are talking about the soil. From what I read(first 2 sentences.lol) they were only talking about the soil and I don't believe that includes the inner rock.

I remember from my 8th grade science lab that both al and zn react with hcl. however al much much slower, and takes a long time to get started. If ur looking for something to do, try mixing lemon juice with salt. If i remember right it produces very mild hydrochloric acid, but it may be concentrated enough to get at least a small reaction. No chem expert though, i dont take chem till next year :-)
