bands (and conduction bands) of different elements, and the fact that if you mix together two metals in a way that one metal's conduction band is similar to its neighbour's valence bands, you get neat quantum stuff happening. (the mention of p- and n-silicon was just one example of elements with overlapping conduction and valence bands; I wasn't asking if you used silicon in your experiments.)
I don't know how on earth valence and conduction bands would help anything, but I just thought I'd ask if that's what you're talking about!
