Project Description:
Well I did it. I bit the bullet and took on a 35 thousand dollar project! That's 35 large for those of you who can't count! It was the only way to pull this off if I wanted a shop.

My goal (I have said this quite often) would be to one day have the ability to support my family from my work in Clean Energy Technologies (OUPower). I never dreamed of being rich... only to be able to make a living doing this for the rest of my life. I'm sure that it's going to take a lot of hard work and an even larger amount of luck to pull that off. So perhaps I can appeal to some of you for help in that area? I will be adding MANY pictures as I go so please bare with me as I slowly upload them and document my progress. If at any point you feel the urge to help me out and donate something toward the completion of my shop, I would be most grateful! http://oupower.com/PayPal/donate.php

Thank you for stopping by to take a look! I hope you enjoy what I've done with the place! For those of you interested in knowing who did the construction work, it was: Pine Creek Structures
2863 Hershey Road
Elizabethtown, PA.
877-743-7559

I can't stress enough how nice a job these guys did for me. They allowed me to use special attic trusses that I designed specifically for the shop and they were willing to work with me on all of the fine details surrounding construction. This is going to be my baby, my workshop for life, so I needed to go with a company that I trusted to do the job right. My hat is off to Pine Creek for all of their hard work and dedication to a job well done!

I let my daughter help me a bit on the 2nd ditch since she wanted to try digging with the backhoe. My wife even wanted to try it out And of course, how could I exclude my littlest guy?! So yes even he got to help dig Daddy's trench!

Now if you didn't think that was enough excitement... here's more fun coming your way! I had to level my site! They wanted me to go an extra 3 feet out on each side, so I was looking at leveling an area 36 x 46. -Keep in mind that I've never done this in my LIFE!

I tried for about 3 hours with this little gem, the teramite and it just didn't have the power to do what was needed for the site leveling. This was bad. I had to get this part done ASAP because the contractors were coming on Thursday to start their work. So I called the hardware store and they informed me that a "skidster loader" (Bobcat) was going to be best for what I had to do. Well I had never operated one before but had no time to worry about that. Bring it over please!

Luckily they got it there rather quickly. It was a beautiful little thing. A down right dirt animal! That thing could dig like crazy... so it was perfect. It took me about 2 hours to get the hang of it and really start going fast... then (of course) tragedy struck! I was suddenly covered in a shower of something. I thought at first it was condensation from the top of the cab that was blowing down on me. However during my next load of dirt I saw what it really was. The damn thing had sprung a hydraulic leak! Oh you have GOT to be kidding me!!?!???!?!? Ahhhhhh! So now here I was, 2 hours into this and again I was stuck. So I called the hardware store and had to leave a message. Luckily I had the teramite still so I was able to remove the dirt that I had piled up while I was waiting for a call back. 2 hours later the replacement finally arrived. It was not as nice as the first one but as long as it did what it was supposed to do, I was fine with it.

My wife ran the teramite to help remove dirt while I was whirring around in the site leveling things out. The big nasty tires on the loader were terrible for the grass so after ripping up my yard a bit I decided to stay in the "sandbox" as much as I could and let my wife ferry the dirt back to the garden. -Yes I had to use my garden as the dumping ground for all of this topsoil. I had nowhere else to go with it and was running out of time. So do you think I have enough topsoil on my garden now? That's the big pile you see in the background! -WAY more dirt then I ever dreamed. I had about 1 foot of topsoil to remove to get down to the subsoil. I was told to make sure I got rid of the topsoil so I did just that. Later when the contractor came, they were like ...."OHHHH NO you didn't need to remove that much dirt." They said I should have just scraped the sod off and made it as level as possible. Oh freakin well!!! It's done now.

But then I find out that it's going to cost me an extra thousand dollars for 4 loads of a special type of stone (not 4b) to fill back in. This pissed me off a bit since I ended up doing more work and in the long run costing myself more money?! Freakin A! The good news here is that now From what I hear, the more compact stone you have the better. So maybe it wasn't such a mistake afterall?

The ditches are dug, the site is leveled the guys are coming to start work on Thursday!

This is the ditch leading the water line up to my garden. I figured since I had the equipment out there, I might as well do this now and reap the dividends later. It sure will be nice to water the garden without having to have hoses all across the yard during the summer!

This is the ditch that will cary the water and electric up to the shop.
