Here's how deeply the bearing was cutting into the housing.

Here I have placed a thin steel washer in between my bearing and the housing. It's a nice snug fit onto the housing shoulder so now the only thing pushing on the housing is the washer. The bearing's inner race rides against the washer now. The outer race of the bearing does not push on anything on the outside anymore. Inside the "outer hub" the outer race is taking the load.

Final assembly in the configuration that my lathe came to me. It's close but apparently not correct. Hopefully someone can help me figure out how this should be properly configured.

side view of the setup.

I ran the lathe a bit and started opening the pistons which closes the lower Variable Speed pully. It pushes the outer hub in on the inner hub.
