Aloha,

Schcarlpaul, in an earlier post, Maintenanceman had stated that he had not retarded the timing. That is likely the cause of the engine damage.
Kumaran, I will soon report gas production info. It will be somewhat relative as this cell works better with some airation, as the results show. Bill

Finally made my first cell using 304 ss .018" sheet. It is a 3 plate + - + design with around 6 sq" surface area per plate and 1/8" gaps. These are just flat plates. 2 in series should use 6V between plates.

Need to keep overall size down due to a lack of room to install. The idea for the +-+ design results in 4...2 plate cells in 2 regular 1 quart canning jars...plus bubbler.

Probably have too much soda in it...one 3 plate cell is drawing around 7.5 amps and runs at 86F (16F rise) after a 20 mins run.

Need to lower the soda amount to get it under 6 amps. Will do some gas production tests on the next warm day...none of those darned palms growing around here! :D

Wondering what is the typical run time to reach operating temps for most cells?

Walfart has some 2 qt PP (polypropylene) containers with locking on lids and silicone seals...has anyone used these?

Yea, it's true, those wal-mart round canisters don't seal well, and they don't take heat well also. In spite of that, I have been using two in a caddy down low in front of the radiator. They do hold 1/2 gallon each.
I am finding the quart size jars need frequent filling. Time to rethink the container. ABS or PVC drain pipe is inexpensive, as are the wide assortment of fittings. I have used ABS with good success, and it is durable.
For bench top cell testing, about an hour for a cell to reach operating temp, usually. If your cell is passing 5 amps, lower your electrolite. And consider two cells in series. When the cell in in a vehical, it will get hotter and use more amps. So, it might be wise to go easy on the electrolite, and slowly increase after some testing. Unless you don't mind numerous failures and repairs (like me).
