thanks SeaMonkey for the url. Great site and it filled some important gaps in my knowledge.

Stepper motor ummmmmm well it spins at a high rpm when I connect power to it so I'm not sure what that means in terms of me using it?

If it's the motor that spins the disk in the DVD then it isn't a stepper motor. Those motors are capable of high rpm's and since the load in normal use isn't great, they're not very powerful. Much like a typical hobby Permanent Magnet motor. The controller chip varies the motor speed by means of a series pass transistor - sort of like a solid state variable resistor.

The motor that positions the optical unit is a stepper motor though.

Have you come up with any uses for it yet?
