Project Description:
My first idea for a "water powered" project was to make a humidity gage or rain indicator. I noticed that pine cones shrink quite a bit when wet and then open up again when dry. One of my cones lost 4 inches of circumference when wet. I dipped the cones in glycerin/water to make them absorb even more water from the air. Then I took apart a cone and found that each petal bends about 90 degrees and they can be glued back to back to swing 180.

This is a toy rooster that dips its beak in a cup of water much like the blown glass birds with alcohol in them. The element soaks up water and forces the "bird" up out of the water to dry. Which will make it dip again. One problem I'm having is that the bird will dip back in the water and go stable and actually track the water level only dipping further as the water dries up.

This is an over balanced wheel run by water absorbtion. There are 3 elements on each side of the wheel. When an element gets wet it moves the weight from the center to the outer edge of the wheel. The elements can be ganged to move more weight.

In the background is a larger lever engine in the dry state. You can see the head of one bird the uses balance to dip in water.
