Project Description:
This is my new Electrolyzer version 5 design! This project is designed with the "Average Joe" in mind. It is built so that it can be easily, cheaply and safely reproduced by anyone with a desire to learn. All that is really required is a hardware store and a place to get your stainless steel. As with any project, what you put into it, is usually directly proportional to what you get out of it. I will do my best to point out the areas in which you could choose to spend more money for the purpose of having a better result. This is a NO WELD design that should work exceptionally well if you take your time with it.

The metal that I used for this Electrolyzer Version 5 is, as always, 18 gauge #316 stainless steel. It is highly resistant to corrosion so I like to use this for all of my electrolysis needs. I have heard that #304 can also be used if you are just planning on using NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide) for your electrolyte. NOTE: NaOH can be found at your local hardware store sold in the drain cleaner section. Look for Red Devil Lye.

My plates are cut to be 12 x 1.5 inches in size. You will get the best results if you find a place that can sheer your stainless for you. Cutting it on a saw would result in a very sloppy edge with a lot of uneven spots. Sheering is by far the best choice when working with pieces like this. -Unless of course you want to pay hundreds of dollars to have them precision laser cut. But remember, this is built for the "Average Joe" here and dare I say that laser cut would provide basically no improvements over sheered pieces.

Every piece of metal that you have INSIDE of this electrolyzer should be stainless steel. Again, try for #316 if you can. I get the bolts from the Fastenal company.


Here you are seeing a picture of me drilling the second hole in my stack of plates.

If you have a good COBALT drill bit, you'll be all set. I recommend using 3/8" stainless (#316) bolts as they should be of sufficient size to handle the current requirements. I stacked the pieces of stainless to do the drilling through all 8 at one time. Doing this, you only need to drill 2 holes per electrolyzer ...and again; NO WELDS required! -Woohoo!

I'll post all of the dimensions and part numbers for the stainless (from the Fastenal Company) shortly. I need to go eat right now.
